We spent a weekend day visiting a ruined city, Hercolano.  It is in Naples, near Pompeii, and it was also destroyed by Mt. Vesuvio.  It is very similar to Pompeii but with more preserved ruins and fewer tourists.  It is interesting to see how the newer buildings are built right next to, even on top of, these ruins.
